Mahir was born in 1973 in Rawanduz, northeast of Helwer, the capital of Southern Kurdistan. He completed his primary school in the same town. When he reached the age of twelve, he moved to Hewler with his family.
While Mahir was a young child, Zriar Muhammad Mustafa, the teacher who inspired Mahir to discover his music potentials, gave him music lessons. Mahir believes that this renowned teacher, who devoted his life to teach music to the children of his town for the last thirty years, was the pioneer who played a leading role in breaking new ground for music in the town as well as in giving rise to a number of new musicians.
While doing his BSc in Civil Engineering at Salahaddin University in 1993, Mahir, with a group of his friends, founded a music band for the university. The band performed a number of concerts, not only inside the university, but also outside in which a larger number of public had attended. That was the first opportunity for Mahir to be on the stage singing in front of audience who often expressed their attraction to Mahir’s voice and songs.
Mahir published his first song when he was an undergraduate student; and so far, he has recorded and broadcasted four albums of Warzi Saholbandan (The Icy Season) in 1997; Basarchoom (I am over) in 2000; Droyaki Shirin (A sweet lie) in 2003; and the latest one is Dil Aweney Dile (The Heart Mirrors the Heart) in January 2008.
Mahir also performed four concerts in 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2004 in Hewler in addition to other several concerts in the European countries in 2006 and 2007.
